Stepping into 2026 with Purpose
It’s 2026! What are we expecting to see for children and youth this year in Canada? Read below to get Helix’s take on what’s to come in the year ahead.
January 13th 2026
- Increased focus on the importance of climate change as a security issue and rights issue for young people. Check out Project Ploughshares’ take on this topic.
- More opportunities for young people to push for the right to vote for 16 and 17 year olds. While there has been real movement on this issue, we’re still waiting for young people to realize this right. Mayoral elections in Ontario, and a provincial election in Quebec means that young people need a say more than ever in electoral politics.
- Continued push for LGBTQ2S+ youth to realize their rights, often in face of hostile provincial governments.
- More privacy and protection of children’s rights online. Expect new legislation from the federal government to deal with the challenges that big media companies pose to the protection and privacy of children and young people.
- Increased action by governments and non-profits on youth homelessness. Children and youth are affected by the housing crisis too, and we will see more of a focus on this by policy makers in 2026. Check out Helix’s Youth Advisory Team’s Resiliency Hub, where they focus on prevention and information for youth facing precarious housing.
