Spotlighting the Lancet Screen Time Study

In our latest blog post, The Helix Foundation is spotlighting the Lancet Screen Time Study.
Published on Sunday, the three-paper series from 13 global experts explores the health, behavioural and developmental connections with children and youth digital media use.
The summary of the series is as follows:
Digital technologies have become embedded within the systems and environments that shape health and wellbeing. They influence how people access information, communicate, learn, work, access health care, participate in society, and make decisions about their lives. Understanding and governing these determinants has therefore become a critical public health priority. This three-paper Series proposes a new approach for conceptualizing and responding to the digital determinants of health, and sets a bold agenda for future research, practice, and governance.
In short, the series is an umbrella (or broad) review of global studies, allowing researchers to compile possible harms and benefits of digital technology.
Health concerns with child and youth digital media use
Digital media use among children and youth was found to be associated with poor mental and physical health. Other concerns include sleep-related issues and lack of physical activity.
Is child and youth digital media use all bad?
Some favourable information about digital media use was also uncovered. For example, a connection between moderate digital media use and higher well-being among children and youth was found.
Protection of health and safety is a priority
The series also explores measures we must take to ensure the protection of children and youth surrounding digital media. Authors emphasized the urgency of prioritizing the health and online safety of young digital media users. They believe that the governance of digital systems should be made a global policy priority.
